Surgical Enhancement

Penile Fillers for Girth – PMMA fillers, Hyaluronic Acid Fillers, and Other Options

This type of procedure believe it or not has been in practice for decades so it’s not like it’s cutting edge or little is known about it. The procedure is done under local anesthesia, a thick needle is used to inject the filler product under the skin of the penis, between the 2 layers of fascia at the surface. An even uniform distribution of the filler material is crucial for a pleasant cosmetic effect. Penile fillers are fairly popular and common at this time, and probably regarded as the best all around form of surgical enhancement – effective and regarded as the safest lowest risk option.

Hyaluronic Fillers – Approved for use by the FDA in 2003 and since then regarded as the safest and best all around filler material. Your body produces it, so as a natural occurring substance it comes with less possible risk of side effects.

According to research one can expect 1.4cm to 3.8cm of increase in girth. Patient satisfaction is 78 to 100%. The material breaks down so you need another procedure roughly 18 months later. One factor in how long the effects of the procedure will last is the “crosslinks” in the product (filler) you receive. This refers to the BDDE which is mixed with the Hyaluronic Acid. This prevents the filler from degrading. The more the filler is crosslinked, the more stable it is and the longer it will hold up to degradation. A higher degree of crosslinking will also make the filler thicker and give it additional volume. On the negative side, too much crosslinking in the filler product can heighten the risk of the body taking the product poorly, having a bad reaction or even rejecting the procedure. There are potential negative side effects, such as the filler forming a lumpy surface texture, the product causing an allergic reaction in the body, amongst other things. Discuss this fully with your doctor/clinic of choice.

PMMA and collagen are other commonly used filler materials, sometimes in combination. A particularly common filler compound is 20% PMMA and 80% Bovine Collagen. A benefit of PMMA is that it does not wear off, so you do not need to repeat the process every now and then to maintain the girth enhancement. It on average increases girth on by around 1″, according to several reports/studies. It is a riskier product to work with compared to Hyaluronic Acid fillers. If something goes wrong or there is a bad reaction to HA filler material it can simply be sucked out with a needle. If something goes wrong with receiving the PMMA filler, it is a much trickier procedure getting it out. The skin of the penis actually has to be stripped down so the product can be aggressively surgically removed, followed by plastic reconstruction. Obviously not ideal and almost sure to negatively effect cosmetic appearance.

Collagen alone was used commonly in the past but has since become less popular due to the fact that effects only last 2-12 months (specifically porcine collagen does have the potential to last 6-12 months but this is still inferior to HA filler). Collagen is well tolerated by the body and according to studies roughly 3% of patients experience negative side effects. However, if negative effects are experienced they are often severe so allergy testing prior to surgery is recommended.
